W6A Season Report
Played 10 – Won 7 – Lost 3
What an incredible season. It’s amazing to think it all started at grading in early February when our team consisted of just four players and a nervous father throwing his hat in the ring to coach. Thankfully we managed to make a few astute signings before the transfer deadline closed to boost squad numbers.
It was a tough start with the weather; the constant rain had a few parents consider a change of sport to water polo. For all but two of our players it was their first season of football and all the girls showed plenty of enthusiasm both at training and on game day. It was great to watch all the girls’ skills improve as the season progressed.
A special thank you to the team manager Lisa Christey, who provided a first time coach plenty of advice, guidance and support throughout the season, your assistance was truly appreciated.
Mad props go to Colin Brown & Adrian Perkovic for stepping into the coaching role. Both these gentlemen have a wealth of knowledge and are passionate to help the girls hone their skills and making sure they have fun along the way.
All our parents were fantastic and showed tremendous support for all team members week-in and week-out often in freezing, muddy and wet conditions.
Our Players
Liliana Brooks – gained confidence each week and enjoyed being on the pitch. Lily was always keen to pass to her teammates and proved to be a real team player.
Isla Brown – went from strength to strength – look out next year. Isla was always amongst the pack fighting to take possession of the ball, she displayed a quick turn of pace with some speedy runs up the wing.
Pia Cali – dazzled us with her amazing dribbling, classy touch and speed, Pia scored a bucket load of goals and stopped as many in defence, a very clever footballer always choosing the right option.
Layla Dryland – a goal-scoring machine and the energiser bunny of the team. Layla can slot goals from close-range, long-range, left, right, centre (and even one directly from a kick-in) there was no stopping her.
Scarlett Perkovic – has astounding strength she would often outmuscle larger opponents off the ball. Scarlett’s pace, silky control and turning skills allowed her to score plenty of long-range goals.
Everly Sankey – the defensive rock of our team who stopped many attacking raids. Everly has an impressive boot which allowed the team to counter quickly from defence to attack; she could find the back of the net too.
Lena Shields – always hungry for the ball and was at home in attack and defence. Lena finished with a very impressive goal tally (showing her dad – how to do it).
It truly has been a pleasure coaching the girls. They are a lovely group and it warmed my heart when the entire team would celebrate a goal or win together. I hope you all enjoyed the season as much as I did.
